The rules of the race.
1. Essence of the event
Paddling marathon.
2. Time and place
Registration on the spot will be held in the start place, separately for both distances, for sea kayaks 9:30-9:55 and for canoes 10:00-10:35.
Start: Mass starts will be held for both distances on specified time and in predefined place.
10:00 Doles island, sea and tandem kayaks 31.05.2008
10:40 Lucavsala boat base, touring and recreational kayaks including Sit-On-Tops, tandem canoes.
Finish: Camp site "Alberta dīķi" (www.albertadiki.lv).
Checkpoints:
CP1 bridge over the City channel by the Opera house;
CP2 under the bridge over Milgrāvis;
CP3 under the bridge over the channel between Lielais and Mazais Baltezers.
3. Participants
The only rule that applied to participants is that participants under the age of 18 are allowed to participate together with one of the parents or with a person authorized by their parents.
4. Distances/Boat classes
46 km (+13km):
1. sea kayaks (length> 4,70m),
2. tandem kayaks.
35 km (+13km):
1. touring and recreational kayaks including Sit-On-Tops (length< 4,70m),
2. tandem canoes.
5. Movement during the course.
Route: Daugava starting at Doles island (start for sea kayaks), Lucavsala (start for canoes and touring kayaks), City Channel (CP1), Daugava, Sarkandaugava, Mīlgrāvis (CP2), Ķīšezers, Lielais Baltezers (CP3), Juglas lake, Lielā Jugla, Krievupe, Alberta dīķi (Finish);
In case of bad weather conditions distance leg to Lielais Baltezers will be cancelled.
Rules of fair play apply to all participants throughout the course. Breach of these rules will lead to a disqualification.
It is not allowed to carry boat over the mainland, unless it is needed to follow the course (this information will be displayed on distance map).
Team should pass the CP in the distance enough for the judge to see the team number.
In case a team withdraws from the distance between checkpoints they have to inform the organizers by phone.
6. Result announcement
The first one to cross the finish line is the winner. Winners are announced in each of the boat classes.
Time limit: 9h from start.
Award ceremony will be held 5 min after expiration of time limit, or 10 minutes after last team has finished the distance (if the team finishes within the time limit).
7. Equipment
Use of these boat types is prohibited:
1. Racing or speed canoes,
2. Flatwater racing kayaks.
Only single blade paddles can be used in canoes. Use of any other means, besides the paddle, to move the boat forward is not allowed.
7. Equipment list:
*Mandatory Life-jacket
*Mandatory cellular phone with fully charged battery in waterproof packaging
*Mandatory spray skirt (sea kayaks)
*Mandatory map of the distance(provided by organizers)
*Mandatory spare paddle (canoes)
*Recommended sufficient amount of food and drinks for all distance
**Recommended sponge or something to bail the water out, in case of necessity
Life-jacket must be worn all times during the race or team will be disqualified.
8. Assistance from outside
Any kind of assistance from third parties during the race is prohibited. In case a team has received help from third parties team will be penalised. Team should inform judge about the fact within 30 minutes after finish. For each case judge will decide about the penalty. Possible penalties:
1. the addition of 30 minutes to total time of a distance,
2. disqualification.
9. Assistance during the course
In case of necessity participants should use evacuation areas recommended by the organizers.
Please note that team will be charged with extra 5 LVL in case of loss on participant number or evacuation using organizers transport.
Participants should give first aid in case some other team needs it. Time spent on it will be considered when announcing results.
9. Registration for the race
To register for the race you must fill out the registration form and pay the entrance fee.
Entrance fee is 8 LVL per team member, if you register by May 18. After May 18, 2008 entrance fee will be 10 LVL per team member
Entrance fee includes organizational expenses as well after finish service (hot drinks, food, bath).
10. Liability
All participants themselves are responsible for their physical and mental condition when applying for the race. They verify this with a signature before start. Participants have to obey the rules of fair play during the race and rules of personal safety on water.
