Marathon race.
In August 21st, the 5th night paddling marathon race is taking place in Salaca river, Latvia. As usual the distance is set from the Burtnieku lake down to the sea - all the 90 km of this picturesque river in one night, you 'll see nothing from dusk to down...
The start is at 21:00 in the evening.
Participants are 2-man (for safety reasons) teams competing in:
1) Sea kayak,
2) Canoe (tandem canoe)
3) Tandem kayak
and
4) Others' categories (SOT, touring kayaks, inflatables, whatever....)
Statistics: The average team spends 13 hours in the distance while best make it in 9 hours. The average speed is 7km/h, but the top racers reach 9.18, slowest - 4.13km/h.
There were 117 racers participating previous Salaca races, 20 of them did it several times.
In case you're ready for this challenge, give a call to race organizer Maris (+371-29263907) to ask for details.
The main point of the rules of the race are:
Start at 21:00 in Vecate
Finish - estuary at the left bank - you'll see from the water.
Control time - 20 hours
Equipment required:
a spotlight
a mobile in a dry pack
a first aid kit,
a buoyancy aid
a repair kit for foldable kayaks
Portages and short-cuts are not allowed, except at the Staicele dam.
At the finish you might expect some hot meal and drink, mobile sauna, ask Maris what else!
Fee is 7 LVL from the team member (14 from the team). We keep this fee as low as possible due to Maris own sponsorship of his maniakal idea... It's really cool!

Feel free to ask your questions at the discussion forums on either Latvian or Lithuanian site. We'll take care to answer your posts.
