The whitewater seminar for advancing second year stivers in Black Cheremosh river.
Black Cheremosh in Ukraine Carpathian is one of the rare post-soviet territory rivers posing its never ending charm and passion to all kind of river adventurers - from rafters and cataraft riders to kayakers and extreme seekers from foldable family-tandem enthusiast clubs.
Formerly known as a standard grade-III river, nowadays, in more demanding kayak era, degraded to II+ it's still a must "river to paddle" for every advancing paddler - its fun, friendly and pretty safe for learning. It is easy accessible too, thus cheap and affordable.
In May, 2009 Campo within it's kayaking school program is organizing a WW seminar for second year beginners at WW kayak class and descend for 2-man catarafts for all people capable to complete a 2-star test (BCU personal performance awards). Stated level of personal performance is must, however not an actual BCU membership or award is required - just a physical and technical capacity according to prescriptions to that level (check out the link). This is needed to be able to work on your skills development, not to concentrate on paddling basics and rescue clinic...
The seminar will take place in Black Cheremosh river in Ukraine form May 1st (departure from Kaunas or Birstonas) to May 10th (arrival). Two classes will be present (note with your application on the right):
1) WW kayaks and open WW canoe,
2) 2-man catarafts (kayak style, see the web page here).
The seminar program during 5 active days on the water will cover the issues of scouting of the rapids, understanding hydraulics, rescue basics from the banks and from the water, self rescue, basic maneuvers in the current, easy green-wave surfing, group tactics.You can aim at 3-star (BCU) performance upon completion of this course, provided that you're fit and prepared to the course at 2-star level.We (the guides) speak English, Russian, Latvian, sorry - not Lithuanian yet!
Rental kayaks (Pyranha Master TG, ESKIMO Diablo) and catarafts (K2) are available. If you're interested - again, note with your application!
Personal equipment required:
WW kayak (river runner, creeker or, at least river-play. No Freestyle boats),
a matching neoprene deck,
paddle,
buoyancy aid (one with a quick release safety harness is an advantage),
helmet,
throw line 15-25m for every kayak or cataraft,
wetsuit or dry suit,
neoprene cap and booties,
camping stuff (tent, pad, sleeping bag),
a personal insurance valid for Ukraine.
Recommended accessories:
Sun screen,
Sun glasses,
Personal medication,
a water bottle in kayak,
dry packed photo-video equipment,
trekking shoes,
a spot light.
Costs:
Participation fee (management, bus rental, group equipment (stoves, pots, safety stuff etc.)) - 740 LTL (500 LTL if you join with your own car);
Variable costs (fuel cost f.e.) ~180 LTL (these and all unexpected and mutually agreed local expanses will be shared between participants according to real expanse);
Food ~120-150 LTL;
If you prefer not to live in tents, but in holiday/guest houses nearby, this cost will be extra.

Applications
To subscribe for the seminar, you have to complete the application (press the "sign-up" button at the top of the right column) and pay the participation fee according to invoice issued (be careful to mention a proper e-mail address with your application - automatically generated invoices and up-coming correspondence will follow to this address).
To participate the seminar - the personal performance evidence should be present. We accept either the passed test session held by Campo (regretfully - only in Latvia, spring time test in Amata river) or the recommendation "in written" from one of your local kayaking or water tourism authorities (club or skilled and experienced individuals). Again - we don't need an official paper, we just need a refference to understand your skill level and we believe in common sense (and the experience) of the people recommending you. There is no way to validate it so be wise and responsible with your own decision first.
